More Birthdays

Sunday, October 31, 2010

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALYSSA (30), TRACY (50) AND COUSIN ROSEMARIE (70).

This afternoon we were invited to Cherylann and Tom's house to celebrate Rosemarie's 79 birthday.  It was fun to be with family and we had a good time. No SUPERSTITIONS for us just plain old fashion visiting and good food.

I want to share Erica's response to my email from yesterday.  Take note of her travels and a new school email address.

Hey Grandma,

That sounds awesome! Amish dinners are the best. I'm actually writing
this from a Chinese restaurant in Fairfax, Virginia! My friend and I
spent the day in Washington, D.C. At the "Rally to Restore
Sanity"...over 150,000 people were there!! Then we went to the
Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the White House.  We're
driving back to Cleveland tonight, whew!

Also, here is my new e-mail address:
erica.belden@case.edu . my old
one (this one) is about to expire, so please send your emails to that
address.

Love you,
Erica

I love hearing from you and please do share your experiences with me so I can relay them on to family.

Amish Dinner

Saturday, October 30, 2010
I can CHEERFULLY say Grandpa and I had a nice time this evening going to the Renaissance  Family Center in Windham for an Amish dinner.
It was deeeelicious with the main meal course being chicken and roast beef, dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans, butterscotch date pudding, homemade bread and pie for dessert.  Some people we didn't know sat across from us and Grandpa started the conversation with them and we found out the man worked with my Uncle Sammy when he worked for the State of Ohio.  Great conversation followed.
There was also a Chinese auction with over a 100 items donated.  I bought a couple of tickets but we didn't stay for the drawings.
Speaking of food, Grandpa's recipe for Root Beer Pulled Pork was amazing.  We had it for supper last night and probably many more nights to come.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

POWERFUL AND EFFECTIVE

Thursday, October 28, 2010

Aunt Sue's sister,Irene, passed away on Monday and the funeral was today.  Irene had no children and her husband died previously so I didn't think there would be many at her funeral.  Grandpa drove and stayed in the car because he remembered the last Russian Orthodox service we were at there was a lot of incense and it gave him a headache.  I was right it was a small funeral and somehow I managed to sit in the front row with young Sam directly across from Irene.  The priest came out who was every bit 6'8" and 300 lbs and stood in front of me.  What did he have in his right hand but the incense.  He swung it forward toward Irene and back directly on me. Back and forth for the full half hour service.  I have to say it was quite POWERFUL AND EFFECTIVE because I was totally immersed in incense and could hardly talk after the service.  The priest said after the service was over that all the friends of Irene come forward first then family and last the immediate family.  Wellllll!  I was the only one who stood up and being I was in the front row I didn't have far to walk.  The rest followed after me.  Irene went to her final resting place and I went to find Grandpa.  I was truly blessed this day in every word of the sense.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

CONTINUALLY

Wednesday, October 27, 2010

I have to share how sweet Grandpa was today.  I went to my bible study this morning and when I came home Grandpa told me he went up town to the quilt shop to see if they had the embroidery thread I was looking for.  Grandpa also helped me yesterday when I finished the appliqué on my quilt and I was short one leaf.  Grandpa came up with a suggestion of sewing some scrap pieces together of the same material of the other leaves and making a new one.  Of course it worked.  Grandpa is my biggest encourager.
Another thing Grandpa did which surprised me was he found a recipe for Root Beer Pulled Pork in the paper and after going to pick up the quilt thread we went to the IGA store for the ingredients to make Root Beer Pulled Pork.
You might think that's all I'm going to write about but one more thing Grandpa did for me was take me to the DQ for a dipped ice cream cone.  This was a heavenly day.  Grandpa CONTINUALLY surprises me with his love.

VALUED

Tuesday, October 26, 2010

Back to our normal routine today with shopping in Middlefield, swimming, driving Amish girls, and of course cooking, dishes, quilting and TV.  Oh yes, the most VALUED thing I do are my devotions and bible reading.  I just can't seem to operate without it.  It gives me the right perspective toward everything I do.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

52 YEARS

Monday, October 25, 2010

I have to laugh because do I dare write what I'm thinking.  Yes, I will!  52 years ago I was soooo modest and I would have just died if Grandpa would have looked through a KEYHOLE to see me getting ready for our wedding night.  Now 52 years later I would just die if Grandpa would look through a KEYHOLE to see this almost 69 year old body for our anniversary night.  Lights off for us folk.:)

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
A Christian is the KEYHOLE through which others see God.

OPPORTUNITY

Sunday, October 24, 2010

This daily blogg gives me OPPORTUNITY to stay in touch with our family and friends.  Even though we are miles apart it makes me feel like I'm right there with you.  It also gives you OPPORTUNITY to know how Grandpa and I are doing.  I'm glad to report we both are doing very well and we thank God for it.

LOVE AND HAPPINESS

Saturday, October 23, 2010

I have some exciting news to share with all of you tonight.  Grandma can hardly contain herself to stand up and shout:  "KASEY AND JARED ARE ENGAGED" as of Friday, October 22, 2010. Kasey is the daughter of Tim and Kathy Grubbs.  She is a junior at Bethel college in IN.
I believe it was a LOVE story in the making from the first time they met.  Grandpa and I couldn't be HAPPIER for them.  Kasey called us this morning to share her good news.  Of course Grandma wanted details and all I can say is Jared revealed his heart to Kasey in a most romantic proposal.  I will have to let Kasey share the details with you.

Tonight on facebook I saw another LOVE story only this was being done by Jess making a pillow blanket for Gary's son, Anthony.  Jess is going to make one little boy very HAPPY.
Jessica is the daughter of our son, Steve.

Old Friends

Friday, October 22, 2010

Tonight Grandpa took me out for a nice dinner at Cal's.  While we were there friends Linda Eaken came in with her husband Skip, daughter, Sue and Sue's two sons Jared and Logan.  I haven't seen Sue since I worked at Hiram and that's over 20 years ago.  Her boys go to Crestwood with Jared in 8th grade and Logan in 4th.  It was so GOOD to see her after all these years.  I thought some of you who went to Hiram might remember Linda and her family.  Linda promised to call and come over for a visit so I'll catch up on the rest of her family to share with you all.

SAD

Thursday, October 21, 2010

Today, Tracy's Mom, Barbara, is having another chemo treatment so we want to remember her in our prayers.

I served again at another funeral dinner at our church today.  The deceased, Rose Turner, had been a member of the church since 1958.  It wasn't a SAD funeral because Rose had been in a nursing home for many years.  To have known her when she was active and eager to serve God and then see how she had to spend the last years of her life was very humbling.  I'm thankful to have known her and to know she is with her Lord, Jesus.

THOUGHTS FOR TODAY
We may live in a SAD world, but the SAD world doesn't have to live in us.

GROW WEARY

Tuesday, October 19, 2010

Had a wonderful meeting this morning with three other quilters.  We are working on a wall hanging quilt depicting Windham's history for their bicentennial this summer.   We have been going through old pictures of Windham which will be incorporate in the quilt.  Kathy you might remember Laura King as she was the friend who visited Granny at the nursing home.  John, you might recall George Belden who also graduated from Hiram College.  Well I am working with his wife Helena.  Helena grew up in Windham and also taught school there. The other gal's name is Kay Mizner and I worked with her years ago when I worked at the Chantaclair. We also go to the same church now. I sure am learning a lot of history about Windham.  I just hope I don't GROW WEARY taking on another project. It always amazes me where God leads me in these days on earth.

LISTENER

Monday, October 18, 2010

I guess you would consider me a good LISTENER.  I've had two phone calls that were intended to be short but ended up about an hour each.  OK, Maybe it was me who was doing all the talking so that makes the person on the other end a good LISTENER.

REWARDED

Sunday, October 17, 2010

Just when I don't think I will have anything to write about the doorbell rings and our 10 year old Amish neighbor comes with two t-bone steaks that was grilled and some homemade pudding.  I had been sitting eating a bowl of Lots of Noodles when she came.  Needless to say I chose the steak over the noodles.  Grandpa decided to eat his Lots of Noodles and the pudding.
It's getting close to Grandpa's bedtime and I'm planning on working on a quilt and watching two of my favorite shows, The Amazing Race and Undercover Boss.  I don't know why we were so REWARDED with having good neighbors but I do thank God for them.

DON'T FORGET

Saturday, October, 16, 2010

The Father in heaven blessed me today by allowing me to help a family who was having a memorial service for their Father.  The Father, Stuart, passed away at the age 93.  I didn't know the family or the deceased.  The family asked if they could have the funeral dinner at our church after Pastor Youngen did the memorial service.  Why am I so touched with this is because I felt the families hurt and loss as they SHARED stories with me.  Stuart was a WW2 veteran so there was a military service following the memorial.  It was very humbling to know how this man served his country and was remembered with this honor.  I DON'T ever want to FORGET the men and women who SACRIFICED themselves for this country.

FREE

Friday, October 15, 2010
It was a little unusual today as the day started out with Grandpa taking an Amish girl to work.  When he came home he said the girl's Mother and Sister wanted to go to a garage sale being held at a person I know very well, Scooter and Karen Gunnoe.  Of course I would be glad to take them.  It was fun because the woman is moving and she was a collector of the 50s and 60 memorabilia.  No, I don't need anymore stuff but I did find a teapot I purchased.
Talked with Aunt Sue today and she told me how she stepped on a snake and fell backwards on her back and hit her head.  She is fine and didn't break anything but I just can't imagine stepping on a garden snake.
I took a chance and used Skype today to call Erica.  I was glad she wasn't in class.  It was fun seeing and talking with her.  It's pretty nice since there is no charge and it is FREE to use Skype.
Cousin Claudia was on the radio station, Atlanta 94, this morning in regards to her boxer rescue mission.  I'm hoping she will be able to record or have a video to put on facebook.
Grandpa took me out for supper tonight.  That was a real treat.  It might have been for sweetest day but I think he was just hungry.

ROSEANN

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

Praise the Lord all 33 miners are rescued!

Roseann is my cousin Rosemarie's daughter who has MS.  She is 48.

Received a phone call from Rosemarie tonight saying Roseann is alright and out of the hospital.  I didn't know she was in the hospital but Rosemarie said she sent me an email that I never received.
The details are 3 weeks ago Roseann had severe pain in her jaw.  She was unable to eat and could only manage liquids.  Cherylann made contact with the Cleveland Clinic to see if they could get Roseann in.  Rosemarie talked to the doctor and said "My daughter is in a lot of pain and needs help".  Roseann went into the clinic on Monday this week.  They told her they couldn't do surgery on her to defuse the nerve because she was on a blood thinner and would be very high risk.  They tried to put an IV in her and couldn't find her vein so she had to drink the steroid they tried to give her.  Because of drinking the steroid she received a yeast infection in the mouth which she has to take more medication for that.  The doctor gave her these small pills to take for her pain which is helping.  The pill is something they give to patience's who have seizers.  Rosemarie has been able to give her solid foods and her medications.  Keep them in your prayers.

A big apology to Kyle for grandma interrupting him during class time.  The TRUTH is I had never called Kyle on Skype and I had seen a little green dot next to his name so I called him from Skype.  He typed "sorry I am in class".  I didn't want to worry him so I wrote a message and told him "I was sorry to call but I wanted to see if my Skype worked"  He wrote "ha-ha the call came through and he didn't know he had his Skype on.

Bells and Whistles

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

I sat down today and wrote all the things in our house that has bells and whistles.  Telephone, stove, microwave, washer, dryer, alarm clocks, door bell and I'm sure there are others I haven't thought of.  I have a reason for doing this.  Today I was in my sewing room and heard another beeeeep, beeeep,  beeeep. and came out to see where that noise was coming from.  Looked outside because it must be there it didn't sound like any of our appliances.  Just sat down to sew and again beeeep, beeeep,  beeep.  Got up again and didn't see anything that would do that. Something is playing with my MIND.  Went back to the sewing room and heard it a few more times and just ignored it.
The mystery was solved when I came out to the computer and realized it was Skype and I was being called.  When Alyssa was here in August she so graciously worked on our computer so it wouldn't take forever to set up when turned on.  Skype was one that took awhile to come on so we left that one off.  I forgot to turn it on since way back when and realized that this morning.  Now I know to turn it on in the morning when I turn my computer on.  My apologies to the Johnsons who so graciously gave us the camera so we could be on Skype.  It was nice to talk with Bev this afternoon even if I couldn't see her.

FREE TIME

Saturday, October 9, 2010
What a gorgeous day we had today in the weather area.  Mid seventies is pretty good for Octo"BER".
It was nice not to go anywhere but just stay home and enjoy this day.  I worked in my sewing room and accomplished more then I had hoped for.  I kept thinking what am I not doing that I'm suppose to be doing that I have this free time.  Everything seems like such a FAST pace that it makes me appreciative for days like this.

BEWARE

Friday, October 8, 2010

Last Wednesday night just about midnight our alarm went off and Grandpa and I couldn't figure out what was happening.  After figuring out where this bizarre noise was coming from I was able to shut it off.  We figured it out that when our Amish girl cleaned on Wednesday she must have inadvertently pushed the alarm button on.   I say "BEWARE" because today her younger sister came here with a plate of cookies for us and I asked her if she would like to play a joke on her sister who cleans for us.  Of course she said "yes".  Sooooo I set a non electric alarm on a clock and told her to hide it in her sister's bedroom.  The alarm was set to go off a midnight tonight.  Before she left she said "When it goes off I will tell her it's a pay back from Pat".  Now it's time for me to "BEWARE". :{

WONDERFUL RESULTS

Thursday, October 7, 2010

Oh have I got a recipe for you.  I picked up a seasoning mix for pork called Crockery Gourmet.  I mix the seasoning with 2 cups of water and put it in my slow cooker.  I put a Pork Loin Boneless Sirloin Roast in and then I added unpeeled red potatoes, coarsely chopped carrots and celery stalks.  Grandpa and I were so surprised how good it was.  It cooked for about 8 hours  on low The roast was 2 1/2 #.  It's a meal ready to eat when done.  The seasoning was amazing.  Some warm cooked  apples would have gone well with it but maybe next time I'll fix them.  All I can say it had WONDERFUL RESULTS.

Erica,  I think your housemates would actually pay you to fix this dish.

Cold, rainy DAY today.  The rain isn't the only thing coming down today I also started with sneezing, runny nose and a little cough.  Good excuse to bundle up on the couch with a blanket and hot cup of tea with fresh honey from my friend Beth..
We are starting a new thought for the day verse.  Some of you may REMEMBER these phrases and verse but I think it's worth repeating.

SENIORS

Monday, October 4, 2010
Well, I have a good one for you today.  I had a response from my good friend Bev who lives in KY regarding not plugging in my slow cooker when making the rice pudding.  I have to tell you I couldn't stop laughing because it is such a reality this time in our lives especially if there are two in the household around the same age.
Enjoy Bev's email to me:
Hi Pat,I was going to write and kid you about forgetting to plug in your slow cooker but I changed my
mind. I went to put toast in this morning and the toaster wouldn't light up. I called Jon to look
at it and he said you have to push it down before it lights up. Mind you I have done it dozens of
times before. I told him I better not  kid Pat. Old age.
Its chilly down here today. We had to turn the heat on. I guess its suppose to get up close to
80 by the end of the week, though.
Well, from one old gal to the other have a good day
Bev
I also have a correction to make:  This goes along with Old Age:  Aunt Shirley emailed me and said Carol's birthday is March 2nd and not Oct. 2nd and Sue's birthday is in October.  All those senior jokes are true that we see and read about.  I'd say "TROUBLES" are brewing in my future.

My rice pudding

Sunday, October, 3, 2010

I know you all must be waiting to hear about my rice pudding.  I came home from church and had all my ingredients on the shelf and put them in my slow cooker.  Easy Right????  The recipe said to let it cook and then mix about half way through.  Wellllllllllll!  I did and it would have been fine if I had plugged in the slow cooker.  So my rice soaked for over an hour before it started to cook.  I did put dark raisins  instead of the yellow ones and it did smell good after it started to cook.  It was done about 6 o'clock this evening and Grandpa and I had a small dish.  I have to CONFESS it was OK.  The apple juice gave it a different flavor which wasn't bad it was just getting use to it.  I think the rice could have cooked maybe a tad more.  Anyway, Grandpa and I will have many many many desserts of rice pudding.
I love trying new recipes so Erica keep them coming and anyone else who would like to give one.

A Good Day

Saturday, October 2, 2010

I was updating our address book and birthdays and found where it was Tim's Dad's birthday yesterday and Carol Canty Aquilia's birthday today.  Carol is 46.  Happy Birthday to them.

Grandpa and I went shopping this morning in Middlefield and on our way I saw the cutest baby LAMBS following their Mama.  It's been a great day even though it's been cool and rainy.   Great day for an afternoon nap which I gladly took.  We tried a new pizza that Wal-Mart makes.  It was $5.00 and it was just OK.  I think we'll probably stay with Digiorno.  I now have the ingredients to make the rice pudding. Yum!
